Channel 4's cheeky World Cup plea to non-football fans

Channel 4 has made a humorous plea to viewers ahead of England's first World Cup match, despite not broadcasting the tournament. The broadcaster took to social media to ask fans to switch over during breaks, jokingly aiming to 'prank' the ratings team.

England vs Croatia kick-off

England's opening Group L match against Croatia is set to kick off at 9pm on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. Coverage begins at 8pm on ITV1, with the BBC also hosting matches throughout the event. However, Channel 4 is not showing any World Cup games.

Channel 4's cheeky Facebook post

On Facebook, Channel 4 wrote: 'We know the other channels have the World Cup and that's great for them but during the breaks if you can switch to channel 4 for a bit it will make our ratings look really weird and we want to prank the team that look after that.'

Social media users loved the honesty, with many comparing the post to Aldi UK's popular social media style. One replied: 'You're giving Aldi UK social media vibes!' Another added: 'Channel 4 marketing/social media teams. Careful with the comical comments, you'll be heading down Aldi UK lines before long and 1. Making us laugh too much and 2. Have legal in your offices way too much. Ps. I'll definitely use you for half time entertainment.'

Suggestions for alternative viewing

Viewers offered suggestions to lure people away from the football. One said: 'Bring back Eurotrash to give the Football a run for its money in the ratings.' Another suggested: 'Get some new 24 hours in police custody on then might consider a deal.'

Non-football fans welcomed the post, with one commenting: 'As we are actively avoiding the football we will already be watching you loads.' Another admitted: 'And for those of us who hate football, we'll be with you every time there's a game.'
