Niall Horan Opens Up About Final Liam Payne Meeting Before Tragic Death
One Direction star Niall Horan has shared emotional details about the last time he saw his bandmate Liam Payne before his tragic death. In a heartfelt interview with GQ Hype, the Irish singer revealed they met in Buenos Aires just two weeks before Payne's passing.
The Buenos Aires Reunion
The emotional reunion occurred on October 2, 2024, in Buenos Aires where Horan was performing. Payne, who was in the city to renew his US visa, timed his visit specifically to coincide with Horan's sold-out concert. Following the performance, the two former bandmates caught up and reminisced about their shared history.
"It was great. Seemed in good form and we had a good laugh, good reminisce," Horan recalled of their final meeting.
The Tragic News
Tragically, just two weeks after their Buenos Aires meeting, Liam Payne passed away at the age of 31 after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony. Horan described learning about his bandmate's death while watching television at home.
"I just remember getting a message and I was just like, What?... I just didn't think it was real. Someone so young, you're not expecting to hear that they've passed, especially someone that you've just seen," Horan revealed.
The singer described experiencing a range of emotions, saying, "I just went back from shock to sadness to anger."
Bandmates Unite in Mourning
In November 2024, Horan attended Payne's funeral in Buckinghamshire alongside the rest of the One Direction members - Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson. Following the funeral, Horan admitted he "went into hiding a little bit" to properly mourn his friend's passing.
Shared Memories and Musical Tribute
Horan reflected on their extensive shared history, from rooming together during The X Factor boot camp where One Direction was formed, to racing around concert arenas on Segways during their touring days. The singer has channeled his grief into music, penning a song titled "End of an Era" for his forthcoming album Dinner Party.
The emotional track includes the lyrics: "Remember what it was like, time passes so fast, and I couldn't tell you goodbye."
Harry Styles' Reflections
Earlier this month, Harry Styles also discussed Payne's death during an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe. Styles stated: "It's difficult to lose any friend, but it's so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways."
He continued: "I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great. It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, 'OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?'"
Styles concluded with a poignant reflection: "And I think the greatest way you can honour your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest."
