Prince William's Claret Tie Nods to Aston Villa During Birmingham Visit
Prince William's Claret Tie Nods to Aston Villa in Birmingham

Prince William made a fitting gesture to Birmingham with his choice of shirt and tie during his city visit on Monday. The future King was in Birmingham to officially open the brand-new James' Place centre, a facility dedicated to providing free, life-saving treatment to men experiencing suicidal crisis across the country.

Royal Visit Highlights

During his visit, Prince William was seen wearing a light blue shirt paired with a claret tie, a subtle nod to his beloved Aston Villa football club. This gesture came shortly after Aston Villa's impressive UEFA Europa League performance against Nottingham Forest at Villa Park. William attended the semi-final match on Thursday night to support Unai Emery's team.

Aston Villa Connection

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery confirmed that William visited the dressing room after the match to congratulate the players. "He was in the dressing room with the players and with me, and of course, he is so happy as well," Emery said. BBC Royal Family correspondent Daniela Relph noted that while William's movements may become more restricted after his coronation, his public support for Aston Villa is unlikely to change. "Security will always be a factor. He won't be a matchday regular, but in the big moments, the crucial games, he will be there," Relph added.

Other Royal Duties

Beyond his football allegiance, Prince William serves as the patron and former President of the Football Association. He is reportedly expected to visit the United States during this summer's World Cup, which will be hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. William was born less than a month after Aston Villa's most famous continental triumph, when they defeated Bayern Munich to win the European Cup in May 1982. It remains unclear whether the prince will travel to Istanbul for the final later this month.
