Diners have expressed their sadness after a popular Indian restaurant in Hall Green announced it will close its doors after 13 years, but the brand will continue as a delivery-only dark kitchen.
Raja Monkey's Transition
Raja Monkey on Stratford Road revealed it would shut its dine-in venue on Sunday, May 10, 2026. The restaurant stated it would continue serving its dishes from a delivery-only kitchen, but its physical location would close.
The restaurant is owned by the Lasan Group, which also operates Fiesta Del Asado in Edgbaston and Solihull. A second branch in Harborne closed in September 2024 after just over a year.
Statement from Raja Monkey
In an online statement, Raja Monkey wrote: "After 13 wonderful years, it is with great sadness that we announce Raja Monkey will be permanently closing its doors on Sunday, May 10, 2026. Like many in our industry, we have faced an increasingly challenging and demanding climate - from rising utility costs to mounting taxes and operating pressures. Despite our best efforts, it has become unsustainable for us to continue operating as a dine-in restaurant. However, this is not goodbye. Raja Monkey will continue as a brand, evolving into a dark kitchen and bringing your favourite dishes to you through delivery and takeaway. For over a decade, your support, loyalty, and love have meant everything to us. It has been an honour to serve you and be part of your lives. Thank you for being part of our journey - and we look forward to continuing it with you."
Customer Reactions
Customers have shared their disappointment and fond memories. Stephen Foster commented: "We have had some of the best food ever in your restaurant. I really think that it was the best place I have ever eaten, never mind the best 'curry house'. The Christmas day meal in 2022 was amazing, probably the best meal I have ever had. Good luck for the future and thank you for everything!"
Jamie Bradley added: "Gutting. Our favourite restaurant, I was only recommending you guys to a friend today! Saying you have to go there. This government is crippling businesses!"
Steven Heap wrote: "I genuinely can't believe a restaurant this good is closing its doors. You could always tell the food was made with real heart and passion. It's honestly shocking to see how much society is changing, and it really feels like the government isn't on the side of ordinary people or small businesses anymore. Wishing the team all the best with the delivery side."
