The music world is mourning the loss of Justin Baren, a founding member of the Chicago-based rock group The Redwalls, who has died at the age of 40.
A Sudden and Tragic Loss
Justin Baren passed away on November 28, though the cause of his death has not yet been officially confirmed. The devastating news was shared by his bandmates via a heartfelt social media post.
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our friend, brother, and bandmate, Justin Baren," the statement read. It described him as an "essential part" of the band, whose energy and raw musicality helped define their sound and their bond as young musicians creating something meaningful together.
From School Band to Major Label Success
Baren's musical journey began in his youth in Deerfield, Illinois. Influenced by British Invasion legends like The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Rolling Stones, he and his brother Logan formed their first band, The Pages, while still at Deerfield High School in 2001.
By 2003, the group had evolved into The Redwalls, quickly becoming a staple of Chicago's vibrant live music scene. Their vintage-inspired debut, Universal Blues, led to a deal with the prestigious Capitol Records. Their major-label breakthrough came with the 2005 album De Nova.
The Pinnacle: Touring with Britpop Legends
A career highlight for The Redwalls was being selected as the support act for Oasis during their 2005 UK and US tour. This included a landmark performance at Manchester's City of Manchester Stadium, now known as the Etihad Stadium, cementing their connection with British music fans.
According to his obituary, music remained central to Baren's life. He continued to write, record, and collaborate, recently working to bring previously unreleased recordings to the public.
A funeral service will be held at Zion Gardens Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois, on December 9 at 12pm. He is survived by his parents, Martin and Ann, his brother and bandmate Logan, and other family members.
