Sydney Sweeney has opened up about filming Cassie's divisive opening scene in Euphoria season 3 episode 5, calling it "the coolest thing" she's ever done. The sequence, which features a Godzilla-sized Cassie wreaking havoc in Hollywood, has sparked significant online controversy.
Cassie's OnlyFans storyline escalates
Cassie's season 3 arc has been a hot topic among fans. To fund her dream wedding, she turns to OnlyFans, with her content becoming increasingly explicit. In earlier episodes, Sweeney performed scenes wearing dog and baby costumes. Episode 5 pushes boundaries further with an opening sequence showing Cassie's OnlyFans antics, including a giant version of her walking through Hollywood to confront a man masturbating to her content. She then presses her bare chest against his office windows, shattering them.
Behind the scenes of the Godzilla sequence
In Euphoria's Inside the Episode featurette, director of photography Marcél Rev explained the creative approach: "The approach was to mimic these 50 foot woman movies or old school Godzilla movies. The miniature set was all in pieces. It was like three or four bigger pieces that you could roll around." The video shows glimpses of the physical set being moved with Sweeney performing on it.
Sweeney described the experience: "The Cassie-zilla sequence was probably the coolest thing I've ever done. The details were unbelievable. There were trees and cars and the buildings were my size." It remains unclear whether she used a stunt double or performed all the scenes herself.
Set took a year to build
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson revealed the extensive effort behind the scene: "It was a lot of fun. It took about a year to build all the miniatures. We had such a big team building Hollywood and downtown LA." The practical set was constructed specifically for the episode.
The scene has divided viewers, with some praising its creativity and others criticizing its explicitness. What did you think of the opening sequence?
