The United Kingdom is bracing for a heatwave that could trigger a phenomenon not witnessed in England since 1976. As temperatures rise into the high thirties, this heatwave is set to break a long-standing record from the 1970s.
Heat Health Alerts in Effect
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a series of Heat Health Alerts that remain in place until 8pm on 23 June. These alerts warn of the potential health risks associated with the extreme heat.
Forecast Details
BBC Weather presenter Simon King explained: "Tuesday will be particularly warm and hot as temperatures widely across England and Wales rise to 26 to 32C (79F to 90F). But in some parts of south-east England it could get as high as 34C (93F). There is a small possibility we'll get close to the UK's highest June temperature of 35.6C, set in 1976."
Jo Farrow from Netweather TV added: "During the weekend, the distinct boundary will fade as high pressure builds. This will bring a fine, settled picture with bright or sunny spells. The heat will spread over southern Britain on Sunday and then surge northwards on Monday."
However, she cautioned: "There are signs that an easterly flow could take hold on Monday, which would hamper any temperature rise for northeast and eastern Britain. The North Sea is still quite cool."
Extended Outlook
Ms Farrow continued: "Beyond that, the heat remains. The GFS model shows the heat remaining and surging past northern Scotland on Thursday, in a week’s time. The heat could linger until the end of June, until it finally clears from the west. The ECM model isn’t as keen on the northward reach for the heat next week. Monday into Tuesday looks warmer for Scotland with a surge of heat later next weekend and the end of June. Again, it shows a clearing eastwards of the warmth with fresher conditions from the Atlantic."
Daily Breakdown
- Sunday: Sunny spells expected, with the odd shower in the south-east during the afternoon.
- Monday: Heavy rain and thunderstorms moving into Wales and northern England. The far north-west of Scotland will also see some rain. Dry and sunny conditions for the south.
- Tuesday: Patchy rain in the north, but dry in the south. Turning increasingly hot in the south and east.
As the heatwave intensifies, residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and check on vulnerable individuals. The phenomenon not seen since 1976 could become a reality this weekend.
