Sutton Coldfield pub divides opinion with new dress code

A Sutton Coldfield pub has sparked a divided reaction after updating its dress code policy ahead of the World Cup. The Station, located in the town centre, announced that sportswear, hats, and hoodies are now banned, with an emphasis on smart or casual attire.

The new rules, which apply after 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, also introduce a last entry time of 11pm and a closing time of 1am. The pub posted on social media: "Hi guys, as a few of you are already aware, we've had a few changes to how we operate recently, and we just wanted to communicate them to everyone. Our dress code has updated. Smart/casual. No entry if in sportswear, hats or hoodies. Our final entry to the venue will be 11pm. Our venue will close at 1am. These changes all start this weekend and apply to Fridays and Saturdays after 9pm. See you this weekend!"

The announcement drew a range of responses. Todd Williamson commented: "It's 2026. Good luck judging what you or the doormen think is smart/casual in this day and age. Great timing, bank holiday heatwave too." Andrea Pritchard wrote: "Can't imagine this will drive your footfall but... hey ho, your pub." However, Caroline Murphy welcomed the change, saying: "Yes!! Bringing back getting dressed up." Others suggested the pub could lose more than half its customers, while some praised the move towards a more polished look.

The dress code update comes just weeks before the World Cup, a time when many pubs typically see an influx of fans wearing sportswear. The Station's decision has clearly struck a chord, with opinions sharply divided among locals and online users alike.
