Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson has revealed she was tempted by a massive financial offer to appear in a pantomime in Birmingham this year.
Scheduling clash forces Hollywood star to say no
During an interview on Capital Breakfast on Tuesday, 3 December 2025, the star explained that a prior commitment to direct a major Hollywood film prevented her from accepting the lucrative panto role. Wilson apologised directly to the people of Birmingham, saying, "I'm sorry I couldn't do it."
While promoting her new movie 'Tinsel Town', which was filmed in Yorkshire, the conversation turned to the UK's vibrant pantomime scene. Wilson noted the significant economic impact of these seasonal shows, especially in regional theatres.
The big business of British pantomime
"Pantomimes are huge here," Wilson stated. "What I learnt from doing the movie is a lot of these, especially the regional ones, they make so much money that they keep the theatres open the whole year because the other shows don’t do as well."
After presenter Jordan North commented that pantomimes "pay the big bucks" to secure famous names, Wilson confirmed she had been approached. She specifically named Birmingham as the location, though did not reveal the exact role or the theatre company involved.
The actress confirmed the offer was for "a fortune," highlighting the substantial investment theatres make in their festive productions. Presenter Sian Welby offered consolation to Birmingham audiences, noting that TV favourite Alison Hammond was involved and "she’s buzzing."
A missed opportunity for Birmingham theatre-goers
The revelation underscores the high-stakes world of pantomime casting, where top-tier talent can command significant fees. Wilson's disclosure offers a rare glimpse into the financial negotiations behind these beloved Christmas traditions.
Despite the star's absence, Birmingham's pantomime season continues with other big names, maintaining the city's reputation for hosting major festive theatre productions.
