You might think finding really good fish and chips in Birmingham city centre by night would be simple. However, while the suburbs boast excellent chippies that make Friday nights special, locating quality fish and chips in the heart of town proves much more challenging than expected.
Apart from Awesome Chips on Bull Street, serving hot cones until 10pm, and Cafe Neo's near the Bullring, open until 2:30pm, there are hardly any standalone chippies to mention. Instead, you need to turn to pubs for a satisfying fish supper. And if reviews are any guide, you'll have to head beneath New Street to find the best of them all.
Bacchus: A Unique Underground Pub
Bacchus is one of Birmingham's most beloved pubs, renowned for its uniqueness. Situated underneath the Burlington Hotel on New Street, it resembles something from Harry Potter, with painted frescos and suits of armour. If you crave a quiet life, the limited phone signal provides an excellent excuse to disconnect and enjoy your meal in peace.
According to TripAdvisor reviews, there is no better place for fish and chips in the city centre. The Nicholsons pub batters its haddock in its own pale ale, serving it with chunky chips, mushy peas, and tartare sauce. Curry sauce is available as an optional addition.
While not the cheapest portion of chips in town at £19.50, the pub offers deals on its website, including free drinks for registered users, which can help bring costs closer to chip shop prices.
