Able Cadet Olivia Mason, who aspires to a career in the Royal Navy, has returned from a camp at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall. She was one of five members from Rochdale Sea Cadet Unit representing TS Frobisher II at the District Camp.
Camp Activities at HMS Raleigh
HMS Raleigh is the Royal Navy's basic training establishment. Olivia, a Year 8 student at The Whitworth Community High School, described the first day: 'We completed an assault course, then had a boat visit. We went on two Royal Navy boats and learned about damage control and firefighting.'
On the last day, the cadets toured a naval boat and entered a submarine. Olivia noted, 'It was weird going down inside. The space was really small and a little claustrophobic.'
Evening Entertainment
The final night featured karaoke, and cadets were allowed to stay up late. Olivia enjoyed the karaoke but said the best part of the camp was damage control and firefighting because she learned a lot.
Cadets from across the country attended the camp. Olivia shared her future plans: 'I am looking to do equine care, spend a few years looking after animals, and then join the Navy when I am a bit older.'
