Knutsford Library has secured £450 from Knutsford Town Council's Community Grant Scheme to support this year's Summer Reading Challenge and a series of creative workshops designed to keep young readers engaged throughout the school holidays.
The funding will enable the library to host one or two special children's events alongside the annual scheme, which encourages children to read for pleasure during the summer break. The initiative aims to maintain literacy skills over the long holiday period while fostering a genuine love of books.
Community Grant Powers Summer Programme
The grant is part of the Town Council's Community Grant Scheme, which offers awards of up to £1,500 to support projects and activities within Knutsford. Funding priorities include providing services for young or older people, improving community assets, and enhancing the town's reputation.
This year's Summer Reading Challenge theme, 'Read to the Beat', explores the connection between stories and music, inspiring children to discover how both ignite imagination and creativity. Upcoming events at the library include cheerleading sessions, craft workshops to make hand drums, and a Disney sing-along activity.

Local organisers emphasise that encouraging an early love of books does more than expand vocabulary—it builds a foundation for a child's future by supporting brain development, imagination, and mental wellbeing. According to research by the National Literacy Trust, children's enjoyment of reading and daily reading habits have risen for the first time in five years, after reaching a 20-year low in 2025. The scheme is open to all and encourages children to read purely for pleasure over the summer holiday, maintaining literacy over the long school break while, hopefully, fostering a love of books.”
