GCSE Grade Boundaries 2026: AQA, OCR, Edexcel Release Details

Grade boundaries for GCSE exams in 2026 will be announced at 8am on Thursday August 20, results day, according to information published by Birmingham Live. The boundaries, which vary by exam board and subject, show the minimum number of marks required to achieve each grade in each subject.

A group of senior examiners determines the boundaries each year based on pupil performance, the difficulty of the paper compared to previous years, and the quality of answers, among other factors. The process is designed so that a student who performed at a certain level should receive the same grade regardless of which year they sat the exam.

What Counts as a Pass at GCSE in 2026

GCSE results are now graded 1-9 rather than A-G. Nine is the top grade, 1 is the lowest, and U means 'ungraded'. To achieve what is termed a 'standard pass', pupils need a grade 4. For a 'strong pass', a grade 5 or above is required, and this grade is often the minimum for subjects students wish to study at some sixth forms and colleges. For some institutions, this requirement can rise to grade 6 or 7, so it is always best to check with the chosen school or college.

Grades 1-3 also count as a pass, but many colleges and sixth forms ask for a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4. Anyone who gets a grade 3 or below in maths or English language will have to resit those core subjects.

Will Grade Boundaries Be Lower in 2026?

Boundaries usually change each year, but the process is in place to ensure fairness for all students across different year groups. The scheme is designed to help provide a consistent way to measure a pupil's achievements so that grades accurately reflect their knowledge, regardless of what year group they are in.
