Students at Mayflower High School in Billericay are celebrating after receiving their A-level results, with many securing places at top universities. Teachers have been praised for their supportive and helpful approach throughout the academic year.
Top Achievers and Their University Destinations
Libby Young, an 18-year-old from Stock, achieved grade A in geography, psychology, and sociology. She will now study education with psychology at the University of Bath. Reflecting on her success, she said: "I was slightly shocked to have done better than I thought I would. I did not get a lot of sleep last night, worrying!"
Young credited a combination of independent study and extra support from teachers for her results. "I have got these results from a mixture of independent work and staying behind at school a lot to revise. I could ask when I needed help, and my teachers could explain when I was struggling. We got to do exam questions which were marked, and then our teachers told us how we could improve," she added.
Politics, Medicine, and More: Diverse Success Stories
Joseph Paddock, 18, from Billericay, achieved an A* in politics, an A in history and economics, and a B in classics. He will study politics, philosophy, and economics at Exeter University. Paddock highlighted the innovative ways teachers supported revision: "Our teachers were always really helpful. We discussed AI and how we could use it to generate sample questions to help with our revision. That was definitely useful."
Benjamin Simpson, also 18 and from Billericay, secured an A* in biology and EPQ, and an A in chemistry and psychology. He will study medicine at King's College, with ambitions of becoming a doctor. Simpson shared his journey: "I realised around Year 9 or 10 that I leaned towards the scientific subjects, but I did not think I was good enough to study them. Then, I started to get the grades and realised I was capable."
Teacher Support Key to Success
Simpson expressed gratitude for the school's unwavering support: "I put my everything into it. The school has been really supportive of me the whole way. They taught me so well. They were really good when I asked for support. I am ecstatic with my results. I could not be happier than I am now."
