The Alder Coppice Primary School community in Sedgley has been left devastated by the sudden and tragic death of a long-serving and much-loved member of staff.
Beloved Figure Remembered
Headteacher Peter Mandelstam informed parents in a heartfelt letter that site manager David Haycock, known to all as 'Dave', died over the Christmas break following a short illness. The news was described as both unexpected and untimely, sending shockwaves through the school family.
Mr Mandelstam painted a picture of a dedicated and popular gentleman, a cornerstone of the school community for a decade. "He was a real 'old school' gentleman who would do anything for anyone," the headteacher wrote, noting Dave's endearing sense of humour and deep affection for his job, which kept him working well beyond the typical retirement age.
His daily routine involved greeting Key Stage 2 pupils at the gate each morning and being there at home time to see them off, often chatting with parents and grandparents. This consistent, friendly presence made him a familiar and cherished figure.
School Closure Delays Communication
The school had intended to break the sad news to pupils carefully through special assemblies at the start of the new term on Monday, January 5, 2026. However, these plans were disrupted as the school remained closed due to adverse weather conditions and freezing temperatures.
In his communication, Mr Mandelstam explained the decision to write to parents directly, acknowledging that many in the close-knit community had already heard the tragic news and would want to offer their support.
A Community in Mourning
The school has pledged to honour Dave's memory and his significant contribution to school life. Later in the term, a special event will be held to commemorate, remember, and celebrate his ten years of service to the Alder Coppice family.
In the interim, the school's thoughts are firmly with Dave's wife, Jo, and his wider family. The headteacher expressed confidence that the wider school community would join in sending sincere condolences and best wishes during this profoundly difficult time.
The loss of such a central and popular figure has undoubtedly left a void at the heart of the Sedgley primary school, as staff, pupils, and parents alike come to terms with the news.
