James Beadle will begin the new season as Birmingham City's undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, with manager Chris Davies handing him the number one shirt for the first time. The 22-year-old, who joined on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, has been given the jersey previously worn by Neil Etheridge, marking a significant vote of confidence from the Blues boss.
Rapid Rise to the Top
Beadle initially arrived at St Andrew's last year with the expectation of playing second fiddle to Ryan Allsop. However, within just 11 games of the Championship season, he had displaced Allsop and established himself as the club's primary shot-stopper. This season, Davies has made the decision official by assigning Beadle the number one shirt, a move that signals his full backing of the young keeper.
Davies explained his reasoning: "I said to James in the summer that one of the reasons I want him back here is because I believe in him a lot and he's mentally strong. He proved that last year."

The Blues manager emphasized the importance of mental resilience for a goalkeeper, noting that even the best in the world make mistakes. "As a goalkeeper, it's not about not making mistakes because even the very best make mistakes in that position. If you're mentally strong then it gives you a great chance," Davies said.
Beadle's ability to handle pressure was a major factor in Davies's decision to bring him back for a second loan spell. "He's got great raw qualities as a goalkeeper, but having that mental strength, to be a really good goalkeeper, it's a must. He coped with the ups and downs last year very well. I could see it day-to-day in how he was and he was rock solid. It didn't mean that everything was smooth but he handled it really well and showed a strength of character," Davies added.
Brighton's Continued Investment
Beadle's future remains tied to Brighton, where he recently signed a new long-term contract. Davies acknowledged this, stating: "He's not our player, he's obviously Brighton's player and they've given him a new contract and believe in him a lot. We believe in him and are developing him and pushing him along, but he has got quality."
The support from Birmingham City fans has not gone unnoticed. Davies noted: "The fans singing his name know what he's capable of and I think James is the right keeper for us."
