Birmingham School Closures Live After Red Heat Warning

The Met Office has issued a rare Red Extreme Heat Warning for parts of England and Wales, including Birmingham, from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday. This is the most severe level of alert, indicating dangerous weather with a high likelihood of risk to life.

Schools and Services Close Across Birmingham

In response to the extreme heat, several schools and services in Birmingham have begun closing to protect staff and the public. Oasis Community Learning (OCL) on Wattville Road in Handsworth announced it would send pupils home at 1.30pm on Tuesday, citing the need to "prioritise the wellbeing and safety of our pupils and staff during this extreme weather."

Perry Barr Children's Centre stated: "In light of rising temperatures and in line with government guidance all of Spurgeons Family Hubs and Children's Centres across Erdington, Perry Barr, Sutton Coldfield and Hodge Hill will be closed for face to face support on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th June 2026."

Attractions Shut Down and Emergency Services Issue Guidance

A number of city-based attractions have also decided to close to the public to safeguard staff. Emergency services are issuing guidelines on staying hydrated and avoiding heat-related illnesses.

This is a developing situation, and more closures are expected. Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbours.
