Richard de Clare Community Academy in Halstead has been praised by Ofsted inspectors for developing a calm and orderly environment, nurturing respectful pupils, and helping the youngest pupils make accelerated progress. The school, which joined Bridge Academy Trust in 2022, has continued its improvement journey after being placed in Special Measures in 2019.
Ofsted Ratings Under New Framework
Under the new Ofsted framework, all aspects of the school are graded from Urgent Improvement to Exceptional. Inspectors found all areas of Richard de Clare to be at Expected Standard, with several areas—including inclusion, personal development, and leadership and management—rated as Strong Standard.
Key Strengths Highlighted
The report praised the school for helping children who arrive in Reception with skills well below age-related expectations to make accelerated progress. Pupils feel safe and supported, and a playground play initiative has helped improve behaviour by providing productive activities such as practising skipping. Staff have high expectations, and pupils demonstrate positive attitudes towards learning.
The school's inclusive vision that all pupils can achieve is well embedded, and the relationship between pupils and staff is caring and respectful. Pupils show curiosity, perseverance, and resilience when faced with challenging tasks, often displaying a strong 'I will do this' attitude. Pastoral support is effective, helping pupils develop socially, morally, and emotionally.
Community and Belonging
Inspectors noted, "There is a tangible sense of belonging; pupils confidently state that everyone is welcome. Richard de Clare is a caring school." Pupils feel proud to be part of the school and are polite and courteous. New pupils are warmly welcomed by their peers, who understand the importance of making everyone feel included. Pupils want to be in school, and generally, they achieve well.
Wider Opportunities and Leadership
The school was also praised for offering wider opportunities such as clubs and trips, which develop pupils' confidence and interests. Headteacher Lucinda Bellett said, "I am immensely proud of this report and the recognition it gives to the hard work, dedication and care shown every day by our staff, governors, trust, parents and, of course, our incredible pupils. It reflects the inclusive, nurturing and ambitious school community we have built together."

Their passion, resilience and determination to provide the very best opportunities for every child have created a culture where children can flourish academically, socially and emotionally."
Transition to New Leadership
As Miss Bellett prepares to hand over leadership to a new headteacher from September, she said, "Leading this school over the past five years has been an absolute privilege and joy. I am incredibly proud to be handing it over to a new headteacher in such a strong position, with clear strengths and a firm foundation for continued improvement and success. I look forward to watching Richard de Clare continue to grow and thrive in the years ahead."
