Market Field School Embarks on Rainbow Flag Award Journey with New Initiatives

Market Field School, which educates children aged five to 16 with moderate learning difficulties, is taking significant steps to celebrate diversity and support its LGBTQ+ community. The school is actively working towards achieving the Rainbow Flag Award, a comprehensive year-long process that involves reflection, self-assessment, ongoing monitoring, and feedback.

Launching New Clubs and Enhancing Staff Training

To kickstart this important journey, staff at the Elmstead Market-based school have undergone specialized LGBTQ+ awareness training. Educators are now wearing badges to visibly signal to pupils that they are approachable and supportive allies. Additionally, the school has launched a Pride Club, providing a dedicated space for students to connect and express themselves.

Curriculum Review to Reflect Diversity

Assistant Headteacher Sarah Gallaher emphasized the school's commitment to inclusivity. "Taking part in the Rainbow Flag Award is about celebrating LGBTQ+ within our school," she said. "We have children here who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Some of them are confused, so we need to ensure they know this is a safe place where they can come to us for support."

Gallaher added that the school is thoroughly reviewing its entire curriculum to ensure it reflects diversity in all areas. "It is an ever-evolving area," she noted. "The award is just formalizing what we already do. I work on inclusion and diversity, so this is part of that ongoing work. We are an inclusive school."

Ongoing Support and External Partnerships

The school aims to create an open forum for pupils to discuss their thoughts and feelings freely. Where necessary, staff are prepared to signpost students to external providers for additional support. The Proud Trust, which organizes the Rainbow Flag Award, will monitor the school's progress throughout the year before making a final decision on awarding the prestigious flag.

This initiative underscores Market Field School's dedication to fostering an environment where every student feels valued and supported, regardless of their background or identity.
