Transfer Exit Highlights Birmingham City Issue After Knighthead Investment
Transfer Exit Highlights Birmingham City Issue

Aurelien Guernier, considered the best prospect in Birmingham City's under-21 squad last season, has left his boyhood club after 13 years to sign for AC Milan. The 18-year-old was one of seven second-year scholars offered professional terms by Blues but opted for a three-year contract with the Italian giants.

Academy Exodus Despite Investment

Guernier's departure comes at a time when the academy has regained Category One status and received investment in facilities at the Knighthead Performance Centre, formerly known as Wast Hills. However, the club continues to struggle to convince its best young talent that they have a future at St Andrew's.

No academy graduate has played league minutes for Blues in the last two seasons, excluding Demarai Gray, who returned to the club last summer after a decade away. Zaid Betteka, who made two substitute appearances in FA Cup games, is the only academy product to feature under head coach Chris Davies.

Pathway Concerns

Supporters point to examples like Amari Miller and Trevan Sanusi, who left for Leeds United and Newcastle United respectively but have yet to make a senior start in English football. Others question whether a genuine pathway exists at Blues.

Davies has been candid about the issue. In quotes given to BirminghamLive in April, he said: "I always feel that an academy player has got to really deserve it and earn it. I am one of those where I think a token gesture can create a false reality for them – they can be much further away than perhaps a debut that you give them suggests. I think there’s players with talent and potential within that. I don’t think there’s any that are really knocking at the door yet."

Guernier was one of the few youngsters Davies rated. He trained regularly with the first team last season and was an unused substitute against Queens Park Rangers in March. However, that exposure was not enough to keep him.

Scoring Record and Frustration

Guernier scored three goals in 15 Premier League 2 matches before turning professional. The versatile forward attracted attention from several clubs, and frustration from his camp suggests Blues did not fight hard enough to retain him.

Losing Guernier adds to a broader debate about how Blues can restore faith in their academy pathway. Alternatively, the club may need to invest more heavily in wages to keep and attract the best under-21 players. Currently, they are doing neither, leaving the academy lagging despite Knighthead's facility upgrades.

This is one of many challenges awaiting the club's new Director of Football.
