Rachel Simcock and her daughter Charlotte Ingle shared a truly special moment as they graduated together from Edge Hill University on the same day. Rachel completed a postgraduate diploma in Education Mental Health Practitioner for Children and Young People, while Charlotte earned a BSc (Hons) in Child Nursing. The ceremony took place on the university's campus in Ormskirk, where they collected their certificates alongside classmates.
A Dream Come True
Rachel described graduating on the same day as her daughter as a “dream come true.” She said, “Graduating together represents years of commitment, resilience and mutual support. As a single mum, my biggest motivation has always been to be the best role model I can for my daughter. Returning to education was not just about my own development, but about showing her what is possible with determination and hard work. Seeing her complete her own degree fills me with immense pride. One of the most meaningful parts of my journey has been sharing it with my daughter.”
An Unexpected Opportunity
Three years ago, Rachel, who works for Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust as a registered mental health nurse in Warrington, accompanied Charlotte to an open day at Edge Hill University. During the visit, she unexpectedly discovered an opportunity for her next career move. She signed up herself shortly after. “As a mature student, I was determined to fulfil a lifelong dream of going to university. For as long as I can remember, I had imagined myself wearing the cap and gown, making my parents proud. Life took a different path but that dream never left me. When I visited Edge Hill with Charlotte, I remember being struck by how welcoming, vibrant and full of opportunity Edge Hill felt, it immediately left an impression on me. When I was later given the opportunity to study there myself, I felt incredibly proud and excited to be part of such a special place.”
Inspired by Family Tragedy
Charlotte was inspired to pursue a career in child nursing after her cousin Molly was diagnosed with throat cancer at age 19. She wanted to help others the way her cousin had been supported by staff at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. “Seeing the dedication, kindness and professionalism of the nurses during such a difficult time had a lasting impact on me,” Charlotte said. “After Molly sadly passed away, I was inspired to pursue a career where I could make a positive difference to the lives of children and their families at a really challenging time in their lives.” Molly’s mother Leeanne joined Charlotte and Rachel to celebrate the occasion, alongside Charlotte’s father Michael and wider family members.
Overcoming Personal Hardships
During her time at Edge Hill, Charlotte also cared for her father Michael after a serious accident. Her resilience and determination kept her going through a very emotional and challenging period. “Balancing placements, assignments, exams and my dad’s hospital appointments was both physically and emotionally challenging. However, these experiences have shaped who I am today and strengthened my ability to keep going, even in the most difficult circumstances.” Charlotte, who currently works at Holyrood Nursery in Warrington, thanked staff at Edge Hill University for their support and said she is excited about future opportunities. “I am incredibly proud to have completed my degree as it has been a tough but rewarding three years. There have been challenges along the way but reaching this point feels like a huge achievement. Graduating alongside my mum makes it even more special. Seeing her determination has pushed me to keep going and sharing this moment together is something I will always treasure. With hard work and support, anything is possible.”
A Message of Hope
Rachel added: “I hope our story inspires others, especially parents and those who may doubt themselves, to believe that it is never too late to pursue your goals and create opportunities for both you and your family.” The dual graduation highlights the power of family support and lifelong learning. Edge Hill University continues to offer nursing degrees and postgraduate mental health programmes, with the next open day scheduled for Saturday, August 15.
