The Department for Transport has confirmed a change that will benefit households without driveways, introducing a 2p per mile cost for electric vehicle charging. Renters, landlords, and businesses will be able to claim up to half the cost of installing an electric charger, saving them up to £500 as grants are extended for a final year.
Home charging for as little as 2p per mile
Increased charging grants mean installation costs for many drivers will be slashed, unlocking home charging for as little as 2p per mile. This is equivalent to the cost of a trip from London to Birmingham for just £3.50, the Labour Party government has confirmed. Expanded access to home charging will help more households make the switch to electric vehicles and prepare UK businesses for the EV revolution. Latest figures show that EV drivers can save up to £1,400 on running costs compared to a comparable petrol car when they access cheaper domestic rates.
Government action to tackle barriers
The move is the latest in a series of actions from the government to address two of the biggest barriers to driving electric: upfront costs and concerns about finding somewhere to charge. Over 55,000 drivers have already saved thousands by purchasing a new EV thanks to the government's £2 billion Electric Car Grant (ECG), which offers savings of up to £3,750 across some of the biggest auto brands. This grant also supports the UK auto sector, including the Nissan Leaf, which is manufactured at the company's Sunderland plant.
Minister's statement
Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister Keir Mather said: "We're taking action to make EV ownership the affordable choice for everyone – not just those with driveways. Bigger grants mean families, flat owners, renters and small businesses can now install a charger for almost half the usual cost, with home charging costing as little as 2p a mile. Combined with our Electric Car Grant which has saved over 55,000 drivers thousands off the price of a new EV whilst boosting sales for carmakers, and record funding for our national public charging network, we're backing the EV revolution for drivers, businesses, and industry."
