Birmingham's New BBQ Gem: Tea's Smokehouse Born from Pandemic Passion
In the heart of Sheldon, a new culinary destination has emerged, born not from corporate plans but from a family's shared passion. Tea's Smokehouse, a halal-friendly BBQ restaurant, is the brainchild of Emil Ahmed, who transformed a simple pandemic hobby into a thriving business with his wife Sabina.
From Cheap Smoker to Dream Restaurant
Emil Ahmed's journey into the world of barbecue began during the pandemic with what he describes as "the cheapest smoker I could find." That humble appliance, now a cherished prop in his restaurant, became the tool for discovering a hidden talent. "I just bought it to see if I could make good food," Emil recalls. "Somehow, I have, and it's taken me on this incredible journey."
Although he has never visited Texas, the American state famous for its barbecue, Emil developed his love for the craft while living in Brussels, where he frequented halal BBQ spots. This inspiration, combined with his upbringing in his father's Birmingham restaurant, fueled his desire to create something authentic for his community.
A Labour of Love and Family Tradition
Tea's Smokehouse, which opened its doors in February, is more than just a business; it's a family affair. Emil and his father personally decorated and painted the restaurant, infusing it with a personal touch. Inside, shelves display their children's toys, and Sabina's plants greet customers by the entrance, creating a warm, homely atmosphere.
"We're a dream team," Emil says with a smile, "but the only arguing we do is in the kitchen." This family-run ethos extends to their pricing philosophy. "We know not everyone has a lot of money," he explains. "We've tried to make prices competitive while being considerate, because this isn't just about profit—it's about sharing our passion."
The Art of Authentic BBQ
At Tea's Smokehouse, barbecue is treated as a meticulous art form. Each day begins at 6 a.m. when the smoker is fired up, with oak wood added to the fire every 25 minutes to maintain the perfect temperature. Stabilizing the smoker alone takes 45 minutes, and the cooking process is a test of patience.
The star attraction, beef brisket, is cooked for hours on low heat and then rested for an entire day before serving, ensuring tenderness and flavor. "It's a labour of love you can't rush," Emil emphasizes. The menu focuses on halal-friendly meats, including honey-glazed chicken thighs, all prepared with simple seasoning to highlight the essentials of barbecue.
Standing Out in Birmingham's Food Scene
In a city gaining new dining options, Emil is clear about what sets Tea's Smokehouse apart. "I'm not doing this for money; I want to make authentic BBQ in Birmingham," he states. His goal is to offer an American-inspired experience in a traditional way, stripped back to the bare essentials.
Reflecting on his roots, Emil shares, "My father owned a restaurant here, and I grew up in the industry. I started in his kitchen and have worked ever since." Ironically, he never planned to own a restaurant, but barbecue became his passion project. He laughs, remembering his mother's advice: "You've never done a hard shift until you've peeled a bag of onions and cleaned the toilet." Now, having done both, he truly understands the meaning of hard work.
Located at 2069 Coventry Road, Sheldon, B26 3DY, Tea's Smokehouse stands as a testament to how passion, family, and perseverance can turn a simple idea into a beloved community hub.
