Washing Machine Cleaner Showdown: Dettol vs Dr. Beckmann
It is easy to assume that washing machines, designed to clean our clothes, remain pristine themselves. However, the truth is more grim, as these appliances can accumulate germs, mould, and persistent odours over time.
Typically, soda crystals serve as a natural cleaning solution for washing machines. In this case, a stronger approach was necessary due to a stubborn musty smell that soda crystals could not eliminate.
Testing Two Specialist Cleaners
Two products were put to the test: the Dettol Washing Machine Cleaner and the Dr. Beckmann Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner. Both were similarly priced, with Dettol at £2.99 and Dr. Beckmann at a slightly lower £2.19.
Initially, the Dettol cleaner was used. One tablespoon was diluted in 200ml of hot water to wipe down the detergent drawer, glass door, and rubber seal. This mixture effectively removed hardened soap residue and small mould patches.
After replacing the drawer and pouring the remaining solution into it, a 60-degree wash cycle was run. Post-cycle, the drum appeared shinier, but the unpleasant odour persisted upon opening the door.
Dr. Beckmann's Superior Performance
Next, the Dr. Beckmann cleaner was tested. With the drawer, seal, and door already clean, the entire bottle was emptied into the detergent drawer. A 60-degree cycle was chosen for a fair comparison.
Upon completion, only a pleasant floral fragrance remained, with no trace of the previous musty odour. Beyond cleaning, regular use of this product aims to promote energy-efficient washing and extend the appliance's lifespan.
While the Dettol cleaner worked adequately on the drawer, it failed to address the drum odour effectively. Given its better performance and lower cost, the Dr. Beckmann Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner is recommended for thorough cleaning.
