As a fieldfare fluffs its feathers against the winter chill, a unique festive initiative invites everyone to embrace the great outdoors. The Wildlife Trusts have launched their annual 12 Days Wild challenge, a heartwarming campaign designed to connect people with nature during the Christmas period.
What is the 12 Days Wild Challenge?
Running from 25 December to 5 January, the challenge encourages individuals and families to undertake one simple, nature-inspired activity each day. It's a free programme, with participants receiving daily emails packed with ideas and inspiration to help them engage with the natural world around them.
The initiative aims to provide a meaningful alternative to traditional festivities, offering a chance to spot seasonal wildlife like waxwings and December moths, or to simply listen for a robin's song on a crisp Christmas morning.
Simple Ways to Connect with Nature
You don't need to be an expert to take part. The Trusts suggest numerous easy and accessible activities suitable for all ages. These are perfect for fitting into the festive schedule and can provide a much-needed breath of fresh air.
Popular ideas include:
- Taking a refreshing Boxing Day walk to blow away the cobwebs.
- Listening carefully to birdsong and trying to identify species like robins or wrens.
- Starting a wildlife diary or scrapbook to document sightings throughout 2026.
- Checking your garden for nighttime wildlife tracks after a frost.
- Sharing your experiences on social media using the hashtag #12DaysWild.
Nature's Boost for Winter Wellbeing
Winter can be a difficult season for many, but immersing oneself in nature offers a proven boost for mental and physical wellbeing. Jo Burke, Nature and Wellbeing Officer at Northumberland Wildlife Trust, emphasises the campaign's importance.
"Christmas isn't always a happy season for everyone, and even the most enthusiastic can find it challenging or overwhelming," Burke explains. "We all need time for peace and reflection, and nature offers us the chance to notice the small things, to slow down, to be present. So turn off the TV and head outdoors for some natural rejuvenation."
The challenge also presents an ideal opportunity to make an eco-friendly New Year's resolution for 2026, fostering a longer-term connection with the environment.
