The Met Office has issued a detailed forecast for Birmingham, warning residents to brace for a weekend of frost and rain as temperatures plummet. The weather authority has also outlined what Brummies can expect throughout the festive period and into the new year.
Weekend Weather: From Frost to Rain
For Friday evening and overnight, the forecast predicts a dry night for most after any isolated showers clear. However, it will turn rather chilly with frost possible in sheltered spots. Temperatures are expected to hit a minimum of 1°C, with light winds prevailing.
Saturday is set to be mainly fine with prolonged sunny spells, though it may turn cloudier in the afternoon. The maximum temperature will be a milder 9°C. The change comes overnight into Sunday, as conditions turn breezier with some rain possible.
Christmas Week Weather Pattern
Looking ahead from Sunday through to Tuesday, the weather is expected to be often cloudy and dull. Some rain and drizzle is possible at the start of this period. It will be initially rather mild before gradually turning colder and somewhat brighter as an easterly breeze develops.
The forecast for the crucial festive period, from Wednesday, December 24, to Friday, January 2, indicates a shift. The Met Office expects "settled conditions" as high pressure builds to the north of the UK. This will, however, bring a strengthening easterly wind over Christmas, making it feel noticeably colder than recently.
A Chilly and Potentially Wintry Festive Season
While a fair amount of dry weather is anticipated, a few showers will still be possible, particularly across eastern and southern parts. The Met Office notes these may be wintry in places, especially over high ground.
High pressure is likely to dominate the run-up to the New Year, slowly drifting west. This will maintain largely settled conditions, although with an increasing chance of showers later in the period. Overall, temperatures will be below average much of the time, with frost likely where clear skies and light winds occur.
This forecast dashes any immediate hopes for snowfall in Birmingham over the coming days, placing rain and frost at the forefront of the city's weather concerns as the holidays approach.
