A severely underweight dog, rescued from a dangerous drugs den in Birmingham, is hoping to find her permanent, loving home in time for Christmas.
From Neglect to Nurture: Bella's Harrowing Discovery
Bella, a three-year-old Cane Corso, was discovered in a state of severe malnourishment at a property in Birmingham during July. Concerns raised by local residents led to her rescue. Inside the home, authorities found no available dog food and the floors were littered with dangerous drug paraphernalia, including used needles.
The poor animal was painfully thin, with her ribs and spine clearly visible beneath her fur. Her health was considered to be at serious risk due to the extreme neglect. Following the shocking discovery, West Midlands Police swiftly placed Bella into the care of the RSPCA's Newbrook Animal Hospital in Birmingham for urgent treatment.
The Road to Recovery with the RSPCA
Bella's immediate need was to safely regain a healthy body weight. Veterinary staff put her on a strict, managed diet to help her build strength without overwhelming her system. Under their dedicated care, she began to thrive.
RSPCA animal rescuer Cara Gibbon, 32, who was involved in the case, described the scene. "It was a difficult case to deal with," she said. "I could see the poor dog was really in need of help as she was so thin for her size and she just seemed so sad in the property. It was not a suitable place for her to be living at all, with all sorts of dangers present."
Cara noted Bella's immediate gratitude, saying the dog was "so happy" to be taken to safety. At the hospital, Bella showed her affectionate nature, giving staff lots of "nuzzles," eating well, and starting to enjoy playing and socialising like any dog should.
A "Big Softie" Ready for a Fresh Start
After her successful recovery at the animal hospital, Bella was transferred to the RSPCA's Southridge Animal Centre in Hertfordshire to continue her journey. Now back to full health, she is described as a completely different dog.
"She is a proper big softie with lots of love to give and is super affectionate," said Cara Gibbon. "I am so keen she finds her new home and gets the love she really deserves. She loves getting her harness on and going for a walk and is an all round bundle of fun who loves her treats."
The RSPCA is now appealing for a committed, loving forever home for Bella, where she can finally leave her traumatic past behind and enjoy the secure, happy life she was denied.
