Cancer survivor's historic Everest climb to fund Macmillan support
Cancer patient's Everest expedition for Macmillan

A woman living with stage four breast cancer is preparing for an extraordinary return to the Himalayas, where she will attempt a historic Mount Everest expedition in Spring 2026.

From Cancer Diagnosis to Mountain Summit

Dr Shaunna Burke, 49, received her devastating cancer diagnosis in 2024 after already securing her place in the challenging Everest Marathon. Despite this life-changing news, the determined mountaineer has since undergone extensive treatment including chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, liver surgery and radiotherapy.

Remarkably, Dr Burke approached her medical journey with the same mindset she applies to mountain climbing. She explains that she "approached treatment like training for the hardest climb of my life", demonstrating incredible resilience throughout her cancer battle.

A Lifetime of High-Altitude Achievements

The Canadian-born adventurer brings considerable experience to this ambitious undertaking. In 2005, she became the second Canadian woman to summit Everest, adding to her impressive mountaineering credentials that include successful ascents of Kilimanjaro, Elbrus and Aconcagua.

Dr Burke's professional background makes her expedition particularly significant. As a cancer researcher and associate professor at the University of Leeds, she understands both the scientific and personal dimensions of cancer treatment.

Fundraising for Vital Cancer Support

Her forthcoming Everest challenge will raise crucial funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, building upon her research into exercise and cancer alongside her personal experience as a patient. Throughout her own treatment, Dr Burke maintained her active lifestyle, running to and from hospital appointments.

She credits staying active with helping her "tolerate my treatment and stay psychologically strong" - an approach supported by her research work, which receives backing from Macmillan, Cancer Research UK and Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The fundraising campaign will cover essential expedition costs including:

  • Flights and travel expenses
  • Specialist climbing equipment
  • Logistical support and permits

The campaign has already raised more than £11,700, demonstrating significant public support for her inspirational journey.
