An 11-year-old fundraiser from Carmarthenshire has raised £228 for Hywel Dda University Health Board's Paediatric Diabetes service during the Easter holidays, while also increasing awareness of diabetes. Seren Morgan, a pupil at Ysgol Bro Myrddin, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in April 2024. She organised a raffle on Thursday, April 9, at The Lyric Theatre as part of Forge Drama's Footloose performances to highlight the condition.
Raffle and Awareness Effort
Seren dedicated a full day and evening of her Easter break, accompanied by her mother, to sell raffle tickets and speak to audiences about type 1 diabetes, guiding families on where to access support. Over the past two years, she has raised approximately £1,800 for Hywel Dda Paediatric Diabetes.
Mother's Praise
Katie Morgan, Seren's mother, said: "Seren has invested a lot of time and effort over the past two years fundraising with her primary school and drama class and aims to do much more. We always want to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes. It keeps her spirits up and makes her feel helpful to other children who have endured this diagnosis and its relentless management. It was fun, and it was emotional as many people shared their stories of type 1. It was rewarding as Seren got to count all the money and present it to her medical team during her medical review. We'd like to say thanks to Forge Drama for thinking about Seren's cause and always supporting her."
Impact of Funds
The funds raised will support the Hywel Dda Paediatric Diabetes Team, helping to purchase resources for children going through the challenging programme at diagnosis and to provide ongoing family support. Katie Hancock, fundraising officer, said: "A huge well done and thank you to Seren for raising funds for the paediatric diabetes service. We are incredibly grateful for everything you have done and continue to do. You are truly an inspiration to us all. The generous charitable donations we receive do not replace NHS funding. Instead, they support additional items and activities outside core NHS expenditure. These small extras make a big difference, and we are so grateful for every donation we receive."
