Two lifelong friends and members of Llangennech AFC have raised £1,475 for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Prince Philip Hospital after completing the grueling Goggins Challenge. Curtis Roberts and Tom Harris split the funds between the hospital department and their local football club, honoring the care received by Roberts' father-in-law.
The Challenge and Its Inspiration
The Goggins Challenge, inspired by retired US Navy SEAL and ultramarathon runner David Goggins, involves running four miles every four hours for 48 hours—a test of extreme physical endurance and mental toughness. The pair took on the feat on May 8, with local community members rallying to support them along various legs of the run.
Community Support and Personal Motivation
Roberts and Harris expressed gratitude for the overwhelming encouragement. “This challenge was about mental toughness, teamwork, and pushing through discomfort for a truly meaningful cause,” they said. “It was challenging, fun, emotional and exceeded expectations with how many people rallied round to support us on various legs of the challenge and donations. Thank you so much for your support, encouragement, and generosity.” The duo's motivation stemmed from the care Roberts' father-in-law received at the hospital unit.
Hospital Staff Express Gratitude
Senior Sister Kath Watkins of the Chemotherapy Day Unit thanked the pair: “On behalf of the staff and patients at the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Prince Philip Hospital, I would like to thank Curtis and Tom for their fundraising efforts resulting a very generous donation of £1,475. We are always looking at ways to improve the environment and improve the way we care for patients within the Chemotherapy Day Unit. Please be assured that this money will go towards this improvement. Thank you!”
Charity Impact and Future Use of Funds
Fundraising officer Claire Rumble added: “We’d like to say a massive thank you Curtis and Tom for taking on such a gruelling challenge in aid of our charity. The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.” The donation will help enhance the unit's environment and patient care.
