State pensioners warned over £1,000 Attendance Allowance fees
Pensioners warned over £1,000 Attendance Allowance fees

State pensioners are being urged not to pay up to £1,000 for help with Attendance Allowance applications, as financial experts say the service can be accessed for free. The warning from Money Wellness follows reports that some retirees have paid more than £1,000 for assistance with the benefit claim, despite being able to apply themselves without charge.

Why the warning has been issued

Rebecca Lamb, from financial support group Money Wellness, said people should not feel pressured into paying hundreds of pounds simply to get help accessing Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) support they may be entitled to. “It’s easy to see why someone might pay for help with a benefit claim,” she explained. “If you’re faced with a complicated form, not sure what information you need to provide, or you’re worried about getting it wrong, paying someone to take that worry away can feel like the easiest option.”

“People shouldn’t feel they have to pay hundreds of pounds to get help accessing support they think they’re entitled to,” Ms Lamb added. The warning comes as reports indicate that some individuals have paid more than £1,000 for assistance with Attendance Allowance applications, a cost that could be avoided entirely.

What Attendance Allowance offers

Attendance Allowance is extra money for people who have a long-term physical or mental condition or disability. According to Carers UK, the condition itself doesn’t matter – what matters is how it affects you. If you’ve reached State Pension age and need help with personal care, or need support to check you’re okay, you may be eligible.

The charity clarified that Attendance Allowance isn’t means-tested, so it doesn’t matter what your income or savings are. You can get Attendance Allowance even if you’re working or studying. If you’re awarded the benefit, you can spend it on whatever you want that makes life easier – you don’t have to spend it on paying for care. However, your local council or trust can take Attendance Allowance into account when working out how much you need to pay for care services.

How to apply for free

Retirees can claim Attendance Allowance directly through the DWP without any cost, using the official application forms available online or by post. The process does not require professional assistance, and the DWP provides guidance to help applicants complete the form correctly.

Carers UK advises that anyone who thinks they may be eligible should apply, as the benefit can provide valuable financial support. The charity’s guidance stresses that the application is free and that no one should feel compelled to pay for help that is readily available at no charge.

The warning serves as a reminder to pensioners to be cautious about paid services that duplicate free government support. With Attendance Allowance worth up to £108.55 a week (as of 2025/26 rates), the financial impact of missing out on the benefit is significant, and paying £1,000 for a claim that can be filed for free is an unnecessary expense.
