The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) continues to increase the State Pension age, but there are eight freebies and discounts people can access before reaching that milestone. The Pensions Act 2014 accelerated the rise from 66 to 67 by eight years, meaning the State Pension age will increase to 67 between 2026 and 2028. The Labour government also changed the phasing so that those born between 6 April 1960 and 5 March 1961 will reach State Pension age at 66 years plus a specified number of months.
Free Bus Pass
The free bus pass scheme varies by local authority. In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, people can apply at age 60, but in most of England, you must reach State Pension age. Exceptions include London and Merseyside, where you can apply at 60. The pass previously offered free travel anytime, but now typically covers off-peak travel (9:30am to 11pm weekdays and all day weekends). Check your local council website for details.
Coach Discounts
Over 60s in England and Wales can get a National Express Senior Coachcard for £15 plus £3 postage, offering a third off standard fares. Additional deals include £15 return fares on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when booked three days in advance, and 15% off adult Fully Flexible fares.
Train Discounts
A Senior Railcard, available to those 60 and over, costs £35 for one year or £80 for three years. It offers savings on many First Class, Standard, Advance, and off-peak tickets, but cannot be used during morning peak times in London and the South East. Check restrictions with the service provider before booking. Buy online, at staffed National Rail ticket offices, or by calling 0345 3000 250.
Food Discounts
Many restaurants and cafes offer early dinner discounts for over 60s. Dobbies garden centres provide a main meal and cake for £12, Monday to Friday from 12pm to 3pm. Every Tuesday, Iceland and The Food Warehouse give 10% off with no minimum spend for those aged 60 and over.
Cinema Discounts
Local cinemas and theatres often offer concessionary rates for over 60s, such as 'silver screen' matinee showings. For example, ODEON Silver Screen tickets cost £3.50 and include free tea, coffee, and biscuits before the film. Check directly with venues for discounts.
Theatre Discounts
The National Theatre offers £20 off midweek matinees for over 60s, while the Royal Shakespeare Company gives 20% off for over 65s on Monday and Tuesday evening performances and all midweek matinees.
NHS Prescriptions
Prescriptions are free in Scotland and Wales for everyone, but in England they are free only once you reach age 60. NHS-funded eye tests are free for over 60s, and dental treatment is free for those receiving Pension Guarantee Credit.
Eyecare
Specsavers offers 20% off glasses priced £70 or more for over 60s, including frames, lenses, and extra options like lens treatments or sun protection. Boots has an over 60s rewards programme that doubles Advantage Card points.
