The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed details of separate payments for millions of over-65s, on top of their usual state pension. The winter fuel allowance, which provides crucial support for energy bills, will be paid later this year.
Who Qualifies for the Payments?
Most pensioners will qualify for either £200 or £300. These extra payments typically enter bank accounts during November. They are designed to help lower-income pensioners stay warm during the coldest months.
Winter Fuel Payments are now linked to income rather than being universal. Retirees can keep the cash if their annual incomes are below £35,000. Households with higher incomes are considered financially comfortable enough to manage without the bonus.
How Much Will You Receive?
The amount depends on age. Those under 80 receive £200, while older pensioners get £300. Over-80s receive more because they are more likely to spend more time at home and rely on heating for longer periods.
Although recipients will initially receive the payments, the amount may later be claimed back in stages by HMRC for those with higher incomes.
