Certain state pensioners can reduce the cost of their BBC TV Licence to £0 by claiming Pension Credit, a benefit that is significantly underclaimed. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) urges eligible individuals to apply, as the licence fee recently rose to over £180.
Who Qualifies for a Free TV Licence?
People aged 75 or over who receive Pension Credit are entitled to a free TV Licence. However, the benefit does not apply automatically; eligible pensioners must apply for the free licence separately. The DWP confirmed in April that Pension Credit will increase by 4.8%, worth an average of £4,300 a year, and unlocks support including help with housing costs, council tax, and free television licences.
The Scale of Underclaiming
According to DWP statistics, up to 950,000 eligible families across Britain are missing out on Pension Credit, which is worth an average of £3,500 per year. Experts at Single Mothers Assistance noted that £2.5 billion remained unclaimed in the financial year ending 2024. Many retirees do not apply because they underestimate the value of the credit, but it acts as a 'passport' to other crucial support, including council tax reductions and free TV licences.
How to Claim
To obtain a free TV Licence, pensioners must first claim Pension Credit. This can be done online via the gov.uk website, by phone, or by post. Once approved, they should contact the TV Licensing authority to apply for the free licence. The DWP stated: “Pension Credit will also rise by 4.8% and be worth an average of £4,300 a year, unlocking further support including help with housing costs, council tax and free television licenses. Between 2026 and 2027, the government will provide a £6 billion boost to spending on State Pensions and pensioner benefits.”
Financial Impact
The current TV Licence fee is over £180, a considerable expense for poorer pensioners. By claiming Pension Credit and the free licence, eligible individuals can save hundreds of pounds annually. The DWP encourages all eligible pensioners to check their entitlement and apply, as the support can deliver savings in other areas as well.
