DWP Pension Credit Recipients Get Free £0 TV Licences in Cost of Living Boost
Free TV Licences for Pension Credit Recipients Over 75 (25.04.2026)

The Department for Work and Pensions is providing free BBC TV licences to eligible individuals, offering a significant boost amid the ongoing cost of living crisis. If you are 75 years of age or older and receive Pension Credit, you qualify for a free TV licence. This benefit also extends to those living with a partner who receives Pension Credit.

Eligibility and Application Process

You can apply for a free licence once you turn 74, provided you already receive Pension Credit. However, you must continue to pay for your licence until the end of the month before your 75th birthday, after which the free licence takes effect. The licence covers everyone residing at your address.

Applications can be submitted online via the TV Licensing website or by phone. For those in residential care or sheltered accommodation, a reduced-rate licence is available for just £7.50, provided you live in an eligible care home, supported housing, or sheltered accommodation. To qualify, you must be retired, over 60, and disabled. Your housing manager can verify eligibility and submit the application on your behalf.

Discounts for Blind Individuals

A 50% discount is available if you are registered blind or live with someone who is. The licence must be in the name of the blind person. If the current licence is not in their name, you can transfer it by making a new application and providing your existing TV licence number. Applications can be made on the TV Licensing website.

If your digital box only plays audio and does not display television programmes, you do not need a licence. TV Licensing also offers correspondence in Braille, large print, or audio format upon request.
