A recent study has found that members of Generation Z need only 42 minutes to achieve a state of complete relaxation, a stark contrast to older generations who require significantly more time. The research, conducted by a leading wellness organization, surveyed over 2,000 participants across different age groups to understand how quickly they can unwind after a stressful day.
Key Findings
The study revealed that while Gen Z individuals can relax in under an hour, millennials need an average of 52 minutes, Generation X requires 68 minutes, and baby boomers take up to 85 minutes to reach a similar state. Factors such as technology use, lifestyle habits, and mindfulness practices were cited as contributing to the generational differences.
Relaxation Techniques
Gen Z respondents reported using a variety of methods to relax, including listening to music, scrolling through social media, watching short videos, and practicing deep breathing exercises. In contrast, older generations preferred reading, gardening, or engaging in hobbies like knitting or woodworking.
Experts suggest that the ability to relax quickly may be linked to Gen Z's familiarity with digital tools that provide instant gratification and distraction. However, they caution that relying solely on technology for relaxation might not lead to long-term mental health benefits.

- 52 minutes: Average relaxation time for millennials
- 68 minutes: Average relaxation time for Generation X
- 85 minutes: Average relaxation time for baby boomers
The study also highlighted that Gen Z individuals tend to incorporate short relaxation breaks throughout the day, rather than waiting for extended periods of downtime. This approach may help them reset more efficiently.
While the findings indicate that younger generations are adept at relaxing quickly, experts recommend combining digital relaxation with offline activities such as exercise, meditation, or spending time in nature to ensure overall well-being.
