The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has outlined eligibility criteria for the Warm Home Discount scheme for the upcoming year. Approximately 1.4 million state pensioners receiving Pension Credit are entitled to a £150 reduction on their energy bills.
Who Qualifies for the Warm Home Discount?
If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, you may be eligible for the discount when the scheme reopens in October 2026. Your energy supplier must participate in the scheme, and your name (or your partner's) must appear on the electricity bill. Additionally, you or your partner must be receiving the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit, even if you also receive Savings Credit. This group is referred to as 'core group 1' in England and Wales and 'core group' in Scotland.
How the Discount is Applied
The DWP has clarified that the discount is a one-off £150 reduction applied directly to your electricity bill by your supplier. The money is not paid to you. In most cases, eligible individuals will receive the discount automatically. However, if you are on a low income in Scotland, you need to contact your energy supplier to apply. If your supplier provides both gas and electricity, you may request the discount be applied to your gas bill instead.
For those using a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter, you can still qualify. Your supplier will advise on how the discount will be provided, such as through a voucher for topping up your meter. If you live in a park home, there is a separate application process.
