Households Urged to Revamp Winter Bedding Storage as Summer Approaches

With the arrival of summer and rising temperatures, experts are calling on households to reconsider how they store winter bedding, warning that improper methods could exacerbate hay fever symptoms. As many people switch from heavier duvets to lighter options, this seasonal change, while space-saving, may increase exposure to dust mites and allergens if bedding is not handled correctly.

Hidden Dangers in Seemingly Clean Bedding

Max Wilson, co-founder of a storage firm, emphasized that even bedding that appears clean can harbor hidden irritants. "Even bedding that looks clean can harbour dust, body oils and microscopic allergens," Wilson said. "If stored incorrectly, it can become a breeding ground for dust mites and trigger hay fever." This is particularly concerning for individuals with hay fever or dust mite allergies, as poorly stored bedding can lead to symptoms when reused.

Essential Steps for Proper Bedding Storage

To mitigate risks, experts recommend several key practices:

  • Thorough Washing: Wash bedding at 60°C or higher before storage to kill dust mites and remove allergens. For non-washable items, vacuum thoroughly with a HEPA-filter vacuum.
  • Complete Dryness: Ensure bedding is fully dry before storing to prevent mould and mildew. "Use a gentle detergent and follow the care label instructions. Crucially, ensure complete dryness," Wilson added.
  • Airtight Storage: Use sealed bags to keep out dust and allergens, and store in cool, dry, dark places like linen cupboards or wardrobes. Avoid damp areas such as garages and basements.

Preparing Bedding for Reuse

Before using stored bedding again, experts advise washing it once more to eliminate any accumulated allergens. Airing items outside on a sunny, low-pollen day can also help freshen them up. Wilson noted that simple adjustments to storage routines can make a significant difference, especially for allergy-prone individuals. "Smart storage is about ensuring comfort. Taking a few extra steps can help keep bedding fresh, clean and free from allergens, making the transition between seasons much easier," he concluded.
