Emi Martinez has been touted as a strong replacement for Alisson at Liverpool amid ongoing speculation about the Brazilian goalkeeper's future at Anfield. Alisson has been heavily linked with a summer move to Juventus, prompting discussions about potential successors.
Friedel's endorsement
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel believes Martinez possesses the mentality required to thrive at a top club. Speaking to GOAL, Friedel highlighted the Argentine's ability to handle pressure and deliver consistently in high-stakes matches.
When asked about Manchester City's young goalkeeper James Trafford as a potential replacement, Friedel said: "Possibly, but you need someone with a skin of leather, someone who's going to be able to play in all the big matches. You need someone who expects to win the Champions League, not just play in it. Expects to win the Champions League, win the Premier League, win the FA Cup, and win the League Cup."
Friedel added: "It's a different type of mentality that you need when you're a goalkeeper at these top clubs. And it's not easy to find. Trafford's a really good goalkeeper, I like him a lot, but that's also a lot to load onto him. Maybe the likes of an Emi Martinez, someone like that, that can take all the games all the time, any criticism, any plaudits, and they know how to deal with it. There aren't many out there that you can just pinpoint and say: 'He's our guy'. That's a hard decision."
Martinez's recent form
Martinez was linked with Manchester United throughout last summer after an emotional end to the 2024/25 season at Villa Park. However, he remained at Aston Villa and played a key role in helping Unai Emery's side secure a fourth-place Premier League finish and win the Europa League.
The 33-year-old Argentine international has established himself as one of the world's top goalkeepers, known for his leadership, shot-stopping, and penalty-saving prowess. His experience in high-pressure situations, including World Cup and Copa America triumphs with Argentina, makes him an attractive option for Liverpool.
Alisson's situation
Alisson has been a cornerstone of Liverpool's success since joining from Roma in 2018, but recent links to Juventus have fueled speculation about his departure. The Brazilian goalkeeper, now 32, still has two years remaining on his contract, but a summer transfer could materialize if a suitable offer arrives.
Liverpool would face a significant challenge in replacing Alisson, who has been instrumental in their Champions League and Premier League triumphs. Martinez's potential availability and Friedel's endorsement add weight to the speculation.
