St Clare Hospice Introduces Special Bereavement Workshop for Children Losing Mothers

When a child experiences the loss of their mother, the world can become a confusing, overwhelming, and profoundly lonely place. St Clare Hospice deeply understands the immense impact of such a loss and recognizes how timely, appropriate support can significantly alter a young person's grieving journey.

'Hearts Without Her': A Safe Space for Young Grievers

To address this need, the hospice is now welcoming referrals for its new initiative, 'Hearts Without Her'. This dedicated bereavement support workshop is specifically designed for children and young people who are mourning the death of their mother. Scheduled for April 1, the three-hour session will provide a secure and nurturing environment where participants can start to process their loss, honor their mum's memory, and connect with peers who share similar experiences.

The workshop will be facilitated by St Clare's experienced family therapist, Amanda Orange, alongside a team of specially trained volunteers. It will incorporate a variety of creative activities, memory-making exercises, storytelling, and gentle group discussions to help children express their emotions in a supportive setting.

Expert Insight and a Compassionate Approach

Amanda Orange emphasized the workshop's purpose, stating: "Losing a mum can completely upend a child's world. With 'Hearts Without Her,' our goal is to create a space where they feel safe enough to begin expressing their feelings, in their own unique way and at their own comfortable pace."

She added: "Being surrounded by others who truly understand can make a monumental difference. It helps reduce feelings of isolation and provides crucial support as they navigate the complex path of grief."

Proven Impact Through Past Success

The hospice's approach is informed by positive outcomes from similar programs. For instance, Ava began attending a bereavement group at St Clare after her father, Bob, passed away. Initially anxious and hesitant, she gradually opened up thanks to a welcoming atmosphere and gentle encouragement.

Through creative engagements and connections with other young people, Ava found effective ways to discuss her emotions and cherish memories of her dad. Over time, she gained confidence, felt less alone, and developed personal coping strategies.

Amanda noted: "'Hearts Without Her' is crafted with that same level of care and sensitivity. Children are never forced to share beyond their comfort zone—the session is flexible, child-led, and focused on meeting each young person exactly where they are in their grief process."
