Ruth Langsford Breaks Down Over Sister Julia's Tragic Death
Television star Ruth Langsford has emotionally opened up about the devastating loss of her older sister, Julia Johnson, who tragically took her own life in June 2019. The Loose Women host, now 66, confessed that she still grapples with profound grief and misses her sibling immensely, nearly seven years after the shocking event that shattered her family.
A Heartbreaking Loss and Unanswered Questions
Julia Johnson, who was 62 years old and had been battling depression, was found deceased by her husband at their family home in Surrey. Ruth Langsford revealed that she spent years attempting to comprehend why her sister made such a desperate decision, but has now come to accept that she may never fully understand the reasons behind it.
In a candid conversation on Fearne Cotton's Happy Place podcast, Langsford expressed the anguish felt by those left behind after a suicide. "I think suicide is just, it’s such a tragedy and the people left behind are just left not knowing why. And your question is just, 'Why? Why? Why? Why?'" she shared, her voice choked with emotion. "And then, as time has gone on, I’ve accepted that I’ll never know why and nothing will bring her back."
Coping with Grief Through Work and Family Support
Ruth Langsford admitted that in the immediate aftermath of Julia's death, she considered stepping away from her television career. The contrast between putting on a cheerful facade for cameras and her internal heartbreak felt jarring and unsustainable. "It seemed wrong to be cheery on screen, when, inside, my heart was breaking," she recalled in a 2020 interview with Best Magazine.
However, it was her then-husband, Eamonn Holmes, who encouraged her to return to work as a form of tribute to Julia. Following weeks of intense mourning filled with crying and sobbing, Holmes reassured Langsford that she had "so much to live for." She credits her professional commitments as a savior during those dark times, stating, "Work has always been my saviour, actually."
Public Announcement and Personal Reflections
Not long after receiving the tragic news in summer 2019, Ruth Langsford publicly announced her sister's passing on social media. She posted a poignant photograph of herself and Julia smiling and embracing on a bench in the English countryside, captioning it with a heartfelt message. "My lovely Sis Julia has sadly died after a very long illness. My heart is completely broken. She was the kindest and most gentle soul and I will miss her forever," she wrote, requesting privacy to grieve with her family.
Reflecting on her journey through grief, Langsford emphasized the importance of moving forward while honoring her sister's memory. "I just miss her so much but I know she would not want me to have a sad life," she explained, acknowledging the balance between mourning and living fully. Her story highlights the long-term impact of suicide on families and the ongoing process of healing and acceptance.
