Sad times... you've grabbed your favourite white T-shirt only to discover it's got yellow stains around the collars and underarms. There's no need to shell out on expensive specialist products though, one cleaning expert says a low-cost alternative could do the job just as well.
The Aspirin Solution
An aspirin is a simple and inexpensive method to revive white clothing, says Nigel Bearman from cleaning company Daily Poppins. He explained that discolouration is not solely caused by dirt, but by a build-up of proteins from sweat and body oils embedded in fabric fibres.
Nigel said: “Aspirin contains salicylic acid, which is a fantastic natural solvent for protein-based stains. When you dissolve it into a soak, the acid works to neutralise the yellowing and break the bond between the fabric and the grime. It’s a trick that professional launderers have used quietly for years to get that crisp, bright finish without using harsh, fabric-weakening bleaches.”
How to Use Aspirin for Stain Removal
The technique involves soaking affected garments in a solution made with dissolved aspirin before putting them through a normal wash cycle. For best results, Nigel recommends crushing five 325mg aspirin tablets and dissolving them in a gallon of hot water before adding the clothing. Items should be left to soak for at least eight hours to allow the salicylic acid to penetrate the fibres.
For more stubborn marks, such as underarm stains, he suggests creating a paste by crushing two tablets with a small amount of water and applying it directly to the affected area. This should be left for around 30 minutes before soaking. Once treated, the garments can be washed as normal. For an added boost, two more crushed tablets can be placed directly into the washing machine drum.
Cost-Effective Alternative
The method offers a significantly cheaper alternative to many commercial whitening products. A standard packet of aspirin can cost as little as 69p, meaning each treatment works out at just a few pence per wash - compared with £10 or more for some premium laundry solutions.
Nigel said: “Aspirin is a safe, gentle, and incredibly cheap way to extend the life of your clothes. It’s especially good for delicate cottons that might be ruined by chlorine bleach.” With many households looking for ways to cut costs while maintaining their wardrobes, the technique could provide a practical solution for keeping whites looking fresh throughout the warmer months.
