Soda Crystals Instead of Vinegar for Softer Towels
Soda Crystals: The New Laundry Hack for Softer Towels

Keeping towels soft, fluffy and genuinely clean can be harder than it sounds, especially as detergent and fabric softener build-up gradually leaves fibres stiff and less absorbent. While many households rely on white vinegar as a laundry hack, one cleaning fan says they have switched to a different natural alternative that delivers better results, and it is widely available in budget shops like Home Bargains.

Why Soda Crystals Work Better

Instead of putting vinegar in the detergent drawer, they now use soda crystals directly in the wash, claiming it leaves towels noticeably softer and fresher straight out of the machine. The product in question is Dri-Pak Soda Crystals, which typically cost around £1.79. Angela Patrone, senior lifestyle reporter at the Express, says she now buys it regularly as part of her cleaning routine and uses it across multiple areas of the home.

Soda crystals are a highly alkaline cleaning agent designed to break down grease, oils and detergent residue that can cling to fabrics over time. This build-up is a common reason towels lose their softness and absorbency, even when washed frequently.

By targeting that residue directly in the wash, the method helps restore fibres so towels come out cleaner, lighter and softer - without relying on traditional fabric softener. Angela commented, “I have had some of my towels going on 10 years now, but they do not feel rough and crusty like you would expect.”

How the Method Works

The approach starts with separating towels from other laundry to avoid lint transfer, which can make towels feel rough or look worn more quickly. A scoop of soda crystals is then added directly to the drum, along with a standard detergent pod. Fabric softener is avoided entirely, with users warning that it can leave a greasy coating that reduces absorbency.

The wash is typically run at 60°C to help remove bacteria and deep-set dirt, followed by an extra rinse cycle to ensure any loosened residue is fully washed away. Once clean, towels are air-dried wherever possible - ideally outside in sunlight, which naturally helps freshen fabrics. If outdoor drying is not an option, an indoor airer paired with a dehumidifier is recommended to prevent damp smells.

The result, according to fans of the method, is towels that feel cleaner, last longer and maintain their softness without the need for commercial softeners or complex routines. This simple, cost-effective hack is gaining popularity among those seeking natural laundry solutions.
