Amber Cold Health Alert Issued for Midlands as Temperatures Plunge
Amber Cold Health Alert for Midlands Until Jan 9

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has escalated its warning for the West Midlands, issuing an amber cold health alert as a severe wintry snap takes hold. The alert came into force immediately and is scheduled to remain active until 10am on Friday, January 9, 2026.

Significant Risks to Health and Care Services

Officials state the forecasted freezing conditions are expected to have a profound effect on regional health and social care provision. The UKHSA has outlined that the situation is likely to trigger "significant impacts across health and social care services."

This elevated risk includes a predicted increase in mortality rates, with the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions being most vulnerable. The agency specifically highlighted a potential "rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with a health condition."

However, the warning extends beyond older demographics. Younger age groups may also be affected, leading to a probable surge in demand for NHS services. A further concern is that indoor temperatures in critical settings like hospitals, care homes, and clinics could fall below the minimum levels recommended for clinical safety.

Council Urges Community Vigilance

In response to the alert, Sandwell Council has activated its cold weather support plans and is calling on residents to look out for one another. A spokesperson emphasised the importance of community support during the freeze.

"During the winter months, it's really important to keep warm and stay healthy," the council advised. "Make sure you know how to stay warm and well in the cold and check in on vulnerable friends and neighbours - look out for anyone close to you who might struggle with the cold."

For those struggling to heat their homes, the local authority has opened Welcoming Spaces in libraries across the borough, including locations in West Bromwich and Smethwick. These provide a warm refuge for anyone in need.

Broader Impacts and Public Advice

The amber alert also notes wider challenges for infrastructure and daily life. These include difficulties in maintaining indoor temperatures at the recommended 18°C, potential staffing shortages in key sectors due to travel disruption, and expected impacts on transport and energy networks.

Residents are being urged to prepare for and be cautious of:

  • Hazardous driving conditions on roads.
  • Likely delays to public and private transport.
  • An increased risk of slips, trips, and falls on icy surfaces.

Furthermore, the council has reminded the public that support is available for rough sleepers. Concerns about anyone sleeping on the streets can be reported via the council's dedicated webpage, prompting the Rough Sleepers Team to make contact and offer assistance.
