Tragic Death of Wolverhampton Lawyer After Cosmetic Surgery in Turkey

A young lawyer from Wolverhampton has died from sepsis after undergoing a Brazilian butt lift and liposuction surgery in Turkey, with an inquest revealing distressing details about her final days. Diarra Brown, aged 28, passed away on October 26, 2021, following a four-hour operation at the Private Memorial Hospital in Bahcelievler, Turkey.

Inquest Reveals Details of Surgery and Loan

The Black Country Coroners Court heard that Diarra Brown had taken out a £10,000 loan to pay for the procedures, which included liposuction, a Brazilian butt lift, and an arm lift. The surgeries were intended to restore her confidence after previous weight loss operations had reduced her from a dress size 18 to a size 10.

Assistant Coroner Kelly Dixon concluded that Diarra died from sepsis and septic shock, with the cosmetic surgery materially contributing to her death. The inquest detailed how she began to feel cold and experienced severe pain just hours after the surgery on October 22, 2021.

Mother's Statement Highlights Professional Pressure

In a statement read by the coroner, Diarra's mother, Daisy Brown, revealed that her daughter felt pressure to look slim in the legal profession and had been teased about her weight at work. Mrs. Brown stated, "Before she had the bariatric surgery, she felt there was a pressure to be slim in the legal profession. During her training, she was still overweight and I think she got teased about it at her work."

The surgeon, Dr. Sevket Gokhan Beyhan, had reassured Diarra that the procedures were safe, claiming he had performed them hundreds of times without losing a patient. Diarra and her mother flew to Turkey on October 20, 2021, after these assurances.

Rapid Deterioration and Medical Response

Following the surgery, Diarra's condition quickly worsened. She suffered from swelling, severe pain, and difficulty moving, with her mother describing how she had to push her around in a chair. Despite multiple contacts with hospital staff, the family was told her symptoms were normal.

By October 25, Diarra was readmitted to the hospital with symptoms including high temperature, breathlessness, and lethargy. Dr. Vanya Gant, a consultant in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, examined the case and confirmed that Diarra's collapse was consistent with severe sepsis and septic shock.

Coroner's Findings and Conclusion

Coroner Kelly Dixon recorded that Diarra died from cardiac arrest due to sepsis and septic shock, with the cosmetic surgery playing a key role. She noted, "I am satisfied that the surgery materially contributed to the sequence of events leading to death." The exact source of the sepsis could not be determined, but it was linked to the surgical procedures.

After the hearing, Mrs. Brown simply said, "The hearing went the way I hoped it would," reflecting the family's search for answers in this tragic case.
