Birmingham Councillor Speaks Out on Women's Silence in Politics
A Birmingham councillor has publicly addressed the significant hurdles women encounter in the political sphere, asserting that they are often prevented from expressing themselves fully. Councillor Shabina Bano, representing the Small Health ward, detailed her personal experiences and called for greater female participation and vocalism in local governance.
Challenges in a Male-Dominated Field
Councillor Bano described politics as a very male dominated world, emphasizing the need to overcome this dominance. She observed that while women are present in politics, they frequently remain somewhat silent and are not allowed to be vocal or showcase their true personalities. This silencing effect, she argued, stems from systemic barriers and cultural stigmas within and outside political parties.
Personal Journey and Party Switch
Shabina Bano, a mother of five, highlighted her transition from the Labour Party to the Liberal Democrats in 2024, following a dispute with her former party. This move was prompted by interactions with Councillor Saqib Khan, which were reported to Birmingham City Council. A standards committee meeting later found that Khan had breached the authority's code of conduct through a pattern of behavior that failed to treat Councillor Bano with respect.
She referenced this switch to illustrate the importance of women speaking up, noting that challenges arise both from within political spheres and from external community judgments. Bano stressed that these obstacles can be overcome through personal resilience and professional conduct.
Call for Increased Female Representation
Councillor Bano urged political parties to allow more women into parties and better understand their needs. She emphasized that with a generation of young people growing up, having silent women in politics sends a detrimental message. Women must be more vocal and expressive to inspire future leaders and address gender inequalities effectively.
Overcoming Criticism and Stigma
Reflecting on her own experiences, Bano shared that she has faced numerous challenges within the community, including criticism and stigma. However, she advised that by maintaining integrity and focusing on responsibilities, individuals can navigate these issues. She described learning to categorize criticism, distinguishing between constructive feedback and baseless nonsense.
Her message underscores a broader need for cultural and structural changes in Birmingham's political landscape to foster inclusivity and empower women to take their seats at the table without fear of reprisal or silencing.
