DWP Distributing 'Extra' Bonus Payments for Three Key Benefits

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is currently allocating funds from the Household Support Fund to local councils across the UK. These allocations are designed to provide additional financial assistance to households experiencing significant economic strain. One council actively participating in this initiative is East Sussex, which has committed to delivering extra payments to residents in need.

Eligibility Criteria for the Support Payments

To qualify for these bonus payments, applicants must meet several specific requirements. First, individuals must be aged 18 or over and reside within the council's jurisdiction. They must also be responsible for paying rent, a mortgage, or council tax at their current address. Additionally, applicants need to have submitted an application through the official council portal and demonstrate difficulty in covering essential costs such as energy, water, or food expenses.

Furthermore, eligible households must fall into one of two designated groups. The first group includes those who are already receiving Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, or Universal Credit. Recipients of these three DWP benefits will automatically qualify for the scheme without further assessment.

Additional Qualification Requirements

The second group comprises individuals who are not in receipt of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction but are receiving a Universal Credit award that includes a Housing Element payment. Importantly, these applicants must not have any tapered deductions for earned income and should possess less than £6,000 in capital to be considered eligible.

East Sussex Council has emphasized that this support extends to helping with the cost of food and utility bills for any fuel used for domestic heating, cooking, or lighting. This includes alternative fuel sources such as heating oil or portable gas cylinders, ensuring comprehensive assistance for various household needs.

Funding Details and Timeline

All programmes under the Household Support Fund are financed by the UK Government, which has allocated a substantial £742 million to county councils and unitary authorities. East Sussex County Council has been entrusted with administering these funds on behalf of the government, with the programme available until 31 March 2026.

However, the council has noted that the fund may close earlier depending on the volume of applications received. From 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, the UK government will provide county councils and unitary authorities with an additional £742 million specifically to support vulnerable households with essential living costs through the Household Support Fund.

For residents struggling financially, East Sussex Council reminds the community that additional help is available beyond these payments. The council encourages all eligible individuals to apply promptly to secure this vital financial support during challenging economic times.
