Final £110 Household Support Fund Payments Issued to State Pensioners Over 66
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is currently distributing the final round of Household Support Fund payments to state pensioners aged over 66 throughout March. These one-off payments of £110 are designed to assist eligible households with ongoing cost of living pressures, marking the conclusion of this specific support scheme as funding is set to expire on 31 March 2026.
Eligibility and Distribution Details
To qualify for the £110 payment, pensioners must be aged 66 or older and entitled to means-tested council tax support. Additionally, the scheme extends to adults receiving home care support on a low income, ensuring those needing assistance to maintain independence in their own homes or local communities can benefit. Eligible households will receive a letter containing the payment voucher, which must be used before the end of the month.
Derbyshire Council in the Midlands has received an additional grant from the DWP, allowing it to continue offering financial aid through the Derbyshire Discretionary Fund. This fund provides further support for households facing financial hardship, with payments of £65 per household plus an extra £15 for each partner, spouse, or dependent child. Households can access up to two awards within a 12-month period, but the scheme will close once the limited funding is exhausted, and applications submitted after closure will not be eligible.
Comparison with Other Local Schemes
While the DWP's national scheme focuses on pensioners, other local councils are running their own Household Support Fund initiatives. For example, in Portsmouth, a single-person household meeting all eligibility criteria and qualifying group requirements is entitled to a payment of £150, whereas households with two or more eligible individuals can receive £200. These variations highlight the tailored approaches different regions are taking to address cost of living challenges.
The Household Support Fund has been a critical resource during economic difficulties, but with its impending closure, authorities urge eligible recipients to act promptly. Derbyshire Council emphasized that the Discretionary Fund is specifically aimed at helping with food and energy costs, providing a vital safety net for vulnerable residents as broader support winds down.
