Solihull Council Leader Demands Integrity in Upcoming Election Campaign
Solihull Council leader Councillor Karen Grinsell has issued a strong call for an honest and responsible local election campaign across the borough. She emphasized that candidates should refrain from making promises they cannot keep as the political race heats up.
All Council Seats Up for Grabs in May
This year marks a significant electoral event in Solihull, with every one of the council's 51 seats being contested. These councillors represent 17 wards, and voters will head to the ballot boxes on Thursday, May 7, to select their representatives for the next term. The election campaign has already begun, with discussions in council debates and candidates starting their canvassing efforts in recent weeks.
Election Covenant to Ensure Fair Play
At the latest full council meeting on February 26, Councillor Grinsell urged fellow councillors to sign an election covenant. This document commits signatories to uphold good standards throughout the campaign period. The leader stated, "It's the councillors election covenant, which should really extend to all people standing in the local elections in May." She called on group leaders to sign on behalf of their political parties, ensuring a campaign focused on local issues rather than personal attacks.
The covenant includes key commitments:
- Conducting a responsible and honest campaign based on local issues.
- Refraining from personal attacks on the character of other candidates.
- Avoiding promises that candidates do not believe they can fulfil.
"That is what I'm suggesting – sometimes it comes later but I thought it was appropriate as we start to go into the election campaign," Grinsell added. "I hope everybody I've asked will sign it."
Voter Registration Deadline Approaching
Only borough residents who have registered to vote before April 20 will be eligible to participate in the May council elections. For those needing to register or update their details due to changes in name or address, the process can be completed online through the official government website.
As the campaign intensifies, the focus remains on maintaining integrity and transparency, with Councillor Grinsell's initiative aiming to set a positive tone for the democratic process in Solihull.
