Trafford Council Sells Assets to Boost Capital Fund Amid Financial Strain

Trafford Council is embarking on a significant sale of buildings and assets, including a town hall and a former library, to generate funds for its capital programme. This move comes as the authority faces severe financial challenges, having recently required a government loan exceeding £12 million to balance its books, a legal obligation.

Residents are also bracing for one of the highest council tax increases in the country, with a 7.49% hike approved for the second consecutive year. Despite these measures, the council still needs to address a substantial deficit, with £17 million in savings planned over the coming years.

Key Assets Up for Sale

The council has identified multiple properties as surplus, aiming to reduce maintenance costs and create regeneration opportunities. Notable assets on the disposal list include:

  • Altrincham Town Hall – a historic building in the heart of the community.
  • Former Altrincham Library – located on Stamford New Road.
  • Two disused schools – the former Moss View Primary School in Partington and Trafford High School in Flixton.
  • Community centres – such as the Jubilee Centre in Bowdon and the former Davyhulme Youth Centre.
  • Car parks and toilets – including Brown Street Car Park in Hale and facilities in Trafford Park.

These sales are expected to raise approximately £10 million, which will be allocated to capital projects rather than day-to-day operational expenses.

Redevelopment Plans for Future Profit

In addition to selling assets, Trafford Council has pinpointed several sites for redevelopment, either independently or through joint ventures, to enhance future revenue streams. Key redevelopment sites include:

  1. Former Sale Magistrates site in Altrincham.
  2. Lacy Street land assembly in Stretford, previously home to a probation office.
  3. Partington Town Centre site behind the shopping centre.

This dual strategy of disposal and redevelopment aims to stabilize the council's finances while fostering local regeneration.

Full List of Sites for Sale

The council's disposal list encompasses a wide range of properties across Trafford, such as:

  • Former RBS Bank in Partington
  • Stamford Quarter and Stretford Mall
  • Various land parcels in Altrincham, Flixton, and Old Trafford
  • Redundant cemetery chapels, subject to review

All sites have been deemed surplus, with the council emphasizing that their sale will alleviate financial burdens and unlock potential for community revitalization.
